On the last weekend of July, the population of Lyons roughly triples. The last weekend of July, 5,000 Festivarians descend on the historic quarry town of Lyons for one of the world's premiere traditional bluegrass festivals. The town itself has fewer than 2,300 year-round residents. If you live here, that ratio is the whole story of your summer.

What you may not have clocked is how tightly the food, the river, and the concert schedule are stitched together in 2026, and how the town is quietly punching above its weight this year on the culinary side. Two Planet Bluegrass weekends anchor the season. The 54th RockyGrass Festival will be held at the Planet Bluegrass Ranch in Lyons from Friday to Sunday, July 24th to 26th, 2026. Two weeks later, the 36th Rocky Mountain Folks Festival takes place from Friday to Sunday, August 7th to 9th, 2026, at the Planet Bluegrass Ranch in Lyons.
If you're not going, plan around them anyway. The week before RockyGrass isn't quiet either: the RockyGrass Academy runs July 19–23, 2026, and for a week before the festival begins, three hundred musicians immerse themselves as active participants in the world of bluegrass. That means jam sessions on side streets, extra pickers at the coffee counters, and campground overflow starting a full week before the wristbands come out. The festival grounds sit where red rock cliffs and cottonwoods peer down over the property as the North St. Vrain River flows through, just feet from the main stage. Locals who know the geography know that a shady spot on the river outside the ticketed grounds is its own kind of front-row seat.
What the town does on Wednesdays
Once the sun stops setting until nine, the town's own calendar fills the weeknights. The Town of Lyons runs a weekly summer concert series in Sandstone Park, and the Saturday Lyons Outdoor Market sets up in the Old Town section, where local, national, and international art, music, and food vendors work from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. through the summer.

Second, there's more room than there used to be: the Town of Lyons recently opened 8 dry camp sites across from Bohn Park in a new 100-space overflow parking lot. This is the part of the year where Lyons's dining scene punches hardest, and where the town's national profile just changed. Marigold, the Main Street bistro, holds a James Beard Semifinalist Best Chef (Mountain) nod for both 2024 and 2026, and it earned a spot on Wine Enthusiast's Best Wine Restaurants in America 2024 list. That's a real credential for a town this size, and it explains why patio seats disappear the second the weather turns.
The bigger 2026 story: Lyons is now exporting talent. Chef Theo Adley, a James Beard semifinalist with his restaurant Marigold, opened his second restaurant Heretík in the River North Art District at 1441 26th St. in Denver in May. The counter-service restaurant's menu is inspired by the cuisines of Northeast Spain and Southern France, featuring curated small plates of seafood and rotisserie cooking. Read that as a signal: chefs cooking at the top of the state's game are running their flagship out of Lyons and treating Denver as the second market. That's a reversal of the usual gravitational pull between a mountain town and the metro.

Indian Bites offers fresh curries, biryani, saag, and family favorites made with care and traditional techniques, and it's a workable answer to the perennial question of what's open on a Monday when half of Main Street is closed. If you're hosting out-of-town guests who want the Colorado-cliché experience, Oskar Blues and Spirit Hound in one afternoon still delivers.
Trails within a coffee's drive
The trailheads that Lyons homeowners actually use don't require driving up a canyon. Hall Ranch is right at the edge of town off Highway 7. Button Rock Preserve sits above Longmont Reservoir. Rabbit Mountain Open Space, out toward Lyons's northeast, gives you a shorter, sunnier ridgeline hike that stays open when the higher trails are still muddy in June.
