That gap is the thing worth understanding about summer 2026 in Carriage Hills. The season's biggest local addition, a full renovation of the clubhouse restaurant led by a chef who trained in a three-Michelin-star kitchen in France, sits at the north end of the paved corridor that runs directly out of the neighborhood. The July events calendar, the fireworks over Lake Estes, the farmers market, the Rooftop Rodeo grounds at Stanley Park — all of them connect to the same trail. For residents, this is the summer where the geography finally pays off.
The trail spur that changes the summer math
Fish Creek Trail extends from Lake Estes Trail south alongside Fish Creek Road, going by the Dog Park, softball diamonds, and the 18-hole golf course as you head out of town. On the other end, St. Vrain Avenue has a 2.7-mile paved pathway that runs from Elkhorn Avenue to Carriage Drive, where it connects to the Fish Creek Trail. Club House Fairway Tavern opened at the Estes Park 18-Hole Golf Course, led by Michelin-trained Chef Caleb Gafner and his father, restaurateur Sean Gafner of Gafner Hospitality Group. The new restaurant and bar brings a casual American menu, a strong cocktail program, and a refreshed dining experience to the golf course, designed for both golfers and non-golfers looking for a place to sit down, eat well, and take in the view. The opening marks a generational moment for Gafner Hospitality Group, as Caleb steps into the role after training and working in France, including 9 months at the three-Michelin-starred Baumanière.

The practical details matter for anyone thinking about walking or biking over on a summer evening. Club House Fairway Tavern is open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, with Happy Hour offered from 3 to 5 p.m. The dining room and patio were rebuilt to hold more people than the Hangar ever did — seating was increased to accommodate 98 patrons inside and 50 outside on the deck. The Club House Fairway Tavern serves steak and seafood, and prime rib dinners are planned for Friday and Saturday nights from 5 p.m. until closing.
The menu itself splits into two registers. For golfers coming off the ninth green there are grab-and-go items meant for picking up between the ninth and tenth holes. For the residents who are actually the point of this post, the offering is elevated American comfort food, from bison burgers and crab cakes to pasta and steak, the kind of place you come for a drink and end up staying for dinner. The cocktail program leans local: signature drinks include a Paloma made with fresh grapefruit and Boulder-based Suerte tequila, the Dailey Daley with vodka, lemonade, and iced tea, and the Transfusion, a golf course classic made with vodka, concord grape juice, and ginger ale.
Context on the operator: Gafner Hospitality Group was founded in 2015 by Certified Executive Chef Sean Gafner and his wife Rebecca with the opening of The Roost in Longmont, and has since grown to include Jefes Tacos & Tequila, Swaylo's Tiki Restaurant & Bar, and 99 Bar Saloon. In 2024 the group expanded into Estes Park with Ember Restaurant & Bar, an upscale lakeside dining destination at The Estes Park Resort & Spa. Club House is the sixth concept and the second in town.
The takeaway for a Carriage Hills household is small but concrete. The nearest table with a Michelin-trained chef in the kitchen is not downtown. It is at the end of Fish Creek Trail.
The two anchors nobody writes about
The tourist-facing guides fixate on Elkhorn Avenue. Two places within a five-minute drive of Carriage Hills do more work in an actual resident's week.
The first is grocery. On Marys Lake Road, Country Market & Deli functions as the neighborhood's default for a gallon of milk, a deli sandwich after a trail run, or the last-minute item that does not justify the trip to Safeway. It is close enough to be walkable in a way that a full grocery run downtown is not.
The second is the porch across the road. Marys Lake Lodge, directly across from the southern edge of Carriage Hills, serves a public restaurant and tavern most nights and hosts an unusual number of neighborhood-scale gatherings — the kind of place a resident ends up at without planning to. If you have out-of-town family for a July weekend and you do not want to fight downtown for a table, this is the default answer.
The July calendar worth walking to
Summer's marquee events cluster around Lake Estes and Stanley Park, which is to say they cluster at the north end of the Carriage Hills trail spur. A short, dated list of what is worth pedaling to this year:
- Rooftop Rodeo, July 6–11, 2026 at Granny May Arena, Stanley Park Fairgrounds. A packed iconic summer event with rodeo action, western tradition, and hometown excitement, and part of the PRCA circuit, with bull riding, barrel racing, bronc riding, rodeo parades, live entertainment, and community events throughout town.
- Fourth of July on Lake Estes. One of Colorado's most spectacular fireworks displays over Lake Estes, starting around 9:30 p.m., with the Big Bang Concert offering live music before the show. From the Fish Creek Trail, you can walk in on the south shore and skip the parking lots entirely.
- SnowyGrass Music Festival at Snowy Peaks Winery. A combination of bluegrass music, local wine, craft beverages, and riverside scenery, with a relaxed atmosphere, outdoor seating, and live bands.
- Estes Park Wine Festival at Bond Park. Taste Colorado-produced wine, cider, and mead at this two-day festival featuring dozens of wineries, live music, food vendors, and artisan booths in the heart of downtown.
- First Friday Art Groove downtown, where you enjoy food and refreshments at various locations while meeting artists and watching live demonstrations, and can ride the free Estes Park Trolley between galleries.
Later in the season the pattern continues. The Longs Peak Scottish Irish Highland Festival, September 11–13, 2026, brings together Celtic music, dance, athletics, and heritage in a lively mountain setting, and Labor Day weekend closes with the annual Arts & Crafts Show at Bond Park featuring more than 100 artists and vendors, plus the popular John Denver Tribute Concert, a longtime Estes Park tradition honoring the singer-songwriter closely associated with Colorado's mountain landscapes.
The seven-minute drive that reframes the summer
South of the neighborhood, the character shifts. Carriage Hills is about a seven-minute drive to Lily Mountain in the Roosevelt National Forest, a medium-effort hike with views of the Estes Valley, and about a minute further south is Lily Lake, which has a paved strolling path around it as well as a small hill for a mild hike. Both are free, and both fill up on weekends, which is a real argument for a Wednesday morning routine.
For households with kids or visiting grandkids, the south edge also holds Cheley Colorado Camp, a four-week summer camp for kids aged 9–17 grouped in units by age and gender, filled with adventure and learning experiences. Residents tend to know Cheley by the summer traffic pattern on Highway 7 more than by the brochure, but its presence is part of why the south side of Carriage Hills feels different from the north in July.
