Saturday Snapshot – Fern Falls

Sam Basel March 21, 2009

Here’s another Saturday Snapshot! Every Saturday, check back here to see another snapshot that captures the flavor and charm of Estes Park, Colorado. Rocky Mountain National Park offers an endless supply of natural wonders to explore and is one of the main reasons people pursue real estate in Estes Park.

Fern Falls is one of my favorite waterfalls in Rocky Mountain National Park. Starting at the trailhead, the trail follows ponds, rivers, and mountain streams the entire way. Just before you reach the falls, the trail leaves the water’s edge and continues uphill through thre trees. Most pictures you find of Fern Falls are from farther away on the Trail. This one required a little bit of rock-hopping to reach the base of the falls – but nothing that hadn’t been done before.

To reach the falls, head to the Fern Lake trailhead on the west side of Moraine Park. Be sure to arrive early as this is a busy trailhead. The hike is only 5.4 miles round trip and travels from 8,155 feet above sea level at the trailhead to 8,800 feet at the falls.
